Recap

In her December 10, 2024, article for Meetings Today, Taylor Smith explores the challenges Generation Z faces in remote work environments and proposes co-workdays as a potential solution. Smith highlights that over 80% of Gen Z employees have never experienced full-time, in-office work, leading to difficulties in developing essential soft skills and professional behaviors. This lack of in-person experience has resulted in concerns about motivation, professionalism, and communication among young professionals.

To address these issues, the SITE Chicago Young Leaders Committee organized co-workdays, providing Gen Z professionals with opportunities to collaborate in person, enhance their skills, and build a sense of community. Participants reported increased engagement and a desire for more such events, indicating that co-workdays can effectively bridge the gap between remote work and the need for professional development among emerging talent.

By facilitating in-person interactions through co-workdays, organizations can support Gen Z employees in gaining the experience and confidence necessary to thrive in their careers.
